What is Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu?
Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu is a self defence oriented art. It is practical and not necessary to be a gymnast to learn the techniques. Seven Star Praying Mantis was founded in the seventeenth century by master Wong Long, a student of Shaolin Kung Fu who wanted to improve his style. He developed a new combat system based on the fighting techniques of the praying mantis, copying principles behind the insect’s movements. He classified them into categories of attack and defence. To compensate for the mantis’s weak legs master Wong introduced footwork based on the agile footwork of the monkey. He further borrowed techniques from seventeen other systems to formulate a complete style. Seven Star Praying Mantis emphasizes the mutuality of "hard" and "soft" techniques, by which the practitioner seeks to avoid using sheer power alone. The system uses long range kicking strategies, close range trapping in-fighting techniques, attacks to vital points, joint locks, and throws. The syllabus includes traditional Chinese weapons such as the staff, sabre, spear and sword.
Chief instructor Sifu Jon Funk has had over thirty five five years of martial arts experience. He started Judo at age eleven, and has practiced Southern Shaolin Kung Fu and dabbled in boxing. In 1979 Sifu Funk began learning Seven Star Praying Mantis under Master Al Cheng, and has continued his study of the Praying Mantis style in Hong Kong and China.
